The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - Zim Zam Zim tour finale pt. II

Following up on last week's recap - a few handfuls of shots off the rolls from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown's two night Zim Zam Zim tour finale in Austin, TX. More from this photo set in our upcoming Issue III (release date announced 3/14).

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - Zim Zam Zim tour finale

“Before the yuppies, I was here!” Arthur proclaimed to a packed and exuberant crowd at Austin, TX's Barracuda. The God of Hellfire returned to the city he called home through a good stretch of the ‘80s and '90s (and current home to some of his family) to bring to a close his first US tour in 47 years with back-to-back shows, February 24 and 25.

Fort Worth’s Pinkish Black, Dallas’ Mothership and Little Rock’s Pallbearer kicked the place into gear on opening night, revving up an anxious crowd for a dazzling 90-plus minute set from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown that featured numerous costume changes and cuts off the 2014 Zim Zam Zim album, in addition to “The Tell Tale Heart” off Tales of Mystery and Imagination - the debut studio album from The Alan Parsons Project - and “I Put a Spell on You,” a Screamin' Jay Hawkins cover off Brown's debut release. Arthur conjured every ounce of his signature stage aura to the East 6th Street venue, a stage which allowed the crowd to intimately appreciate Arthur’s soaring vocal ability and lithe girations, moves more resemblant of a 20-something festival dancer than a 75-year-old psych icon. And his band, featuring Austinite Bruce Hughes (a friend and collaborator from Arthur’s earlier Austin years) on bass, Carter Arrington on guitar, Dane Farnsworth on keys and Chip Vayenas on drums, was nothing short of astounding in their own right. (Farnsworth was led on a tour across the stage both nights, keeping up with his finger work as Arthur snatched up the keyboard and paraded it around the stage).

Night two welcomed all female-fronted opening acts, with Electric Citizen (who held down a supporting role throughout the tour), Jex Thoth and Acid King ushering in the second wave of hellfire-seekers (and many return attendees) for an even flashier round two. As a small set of stairs was arranged at the front of the stage prior to TCWOAB’s set, rumors of a flaming helmet appearance, which was absent night one, began to weave their way through the throng. (Stay tuned for more photos in our upcoming print issue - ya can’t ruin everything on the immediate gratification of the Almighty Internet!)

While both nights elicited an impassioned crowd response, night two took a notably boisterous turn near the end of the set during "Muscle of Love" and then "Junkyard King" as a few wildcards took to stage diving, and trying their damnedest to get a pit turning in a generally non-pit environment. (Even drawing the ire of a few unenthused attendees, to put it mildly: “I am going to punch that idiot in the back of the head” was one declaration I heard from behind me). Ever the showman, Arthur never broke stride or his steadied sense of humor, blaring through the megaphone he’d recently employed to do as you please but “don’t push over the electronic equipment. And don’t you piss in my microwave either!”

Following "Junkyard King", the band exited the stage after a brief farewell bow. Arthur ensnared the audience for one last cut, swinging back to a sultry disposition as he and Arrington slid into Jungle Fever, capping off a memorable finale, one which further reinforced The Crazy World of Arthur Brown as one of the strangest, funkiest bands to have graced this rock. Cheers to Psycho Entertainment for producing such an event, to Boss Tweed for a killer backline and for keeping things tight, to the staff and sound team at the Barracuda and everyone else involved.

We will post some of the film shots (including shots of Mothership and Pinkish Black) next week once they are developed. Stay tuned for our favorite selections from the weekend in future print releases, including our upcoming Issue III out at the end of this month.

The Decemburger 2016

10 sliders didn't sound like THAT much. I kind of figured it would be a sprint, with the drunks stumbling to glory mere bites ahead of the stoners. Yet, the course proved deceptively steep and Andrew Renfrow, the lone competitive eater in the six-man field, took home the title at the first-ever Decemburger at the Hi Dive in Denver, Colorado.

For those who blew it, the inaugural edition of Dust Presents rock ’n’ roll concert/eating contest hybrid went off last Saturday, with the south Broadway party bringing in The Shrine, The Well, Zig Zags, Duel and Malahierba to join locals Love Gang, Cloud Catcher, The Munsens and In the Company of Serpents for a Philadelphia Collins’-approved, greasy good time at Denver’s finest venue. For the "burger" portion of the event, a handful of Denver’s most ravenous dirty burger fans took the stage just before The Well’s set to try their luck at finishing 10 sliders from 5280 Sliders before any of their counterparts to take home a massive prize pack courtesy of the bands, 303 Boards, LivWell, 720 Board Shop, Trve Brewing, From Beyond and this publication. While many of the contestants seemed to saddle up with a leisurely approach - more “take the edge off my buzz” than “fire through ten sliders” - Mr. Renfrow sure meant business, and his pro-eater “pour water on the buns approach” (paired with that little wiggle all competitive eaters seem to do), had him sending his last morsel of beef down the pipe before the rest of the gang had reached for their third burger. Cheers to ya, Andrew!

As for the music - the place was ripping the whole lineup through - as can be expected with such a bill and venue. With the late-afternoon nightfall of the season, attendees showed up early for opening performances from a selection of Denver’s heaviest talent and stayed late, spilling their night-capper during a blistering closer of a set few but The Shrine could deliver. The Decemburger marked the first Denver appearance for Zig Zags (Los Angeles) and Duel (Austin), both of which left an unmistakeable buzz in the crowd, and also served as the first Denver unveiling from The Well of tracks off their brand new album, Pagan Science. Juarez-based, Malahierba, a band that has spent a fair amount of time in the Mile High City over the last two years, reiterated why they are quickly becoming everyone’s favorite band. Stay tuned for more from The Decemburger in upcoming Issues III and IV. And all the other good shit you expect from rock n roll parties, that was all there, too.

The next Dust Presents festival is the second edition of Denver Electric Funeral, now a two-day event, coming up on June 16-17. Save the date, details and lineup to follow.

Denver Electric Funeral fest // web gallery 1

Last weekend, hordes of rock n rollers rallied down to Denver's 3 Kings Tavern for the first ever Denver Electric Funeral festival from Dust Presents, a 2-day event featuring an impressive selection of North America's finest and most exciting rock and roll bands that felt a whole lot more like the best house party show you've ever been to than your average "festival". If you were there, you know exactly what we are talking about, if you missed out, have yourself a browse and a resolution not to blow it next year.

Below is our first of two web galleries from the festival. We will have the follow up gallery live on site next weekend. We'll be saving our favorite shots for the upcoming print feature, due out in Issue III this August.

Denver Electric Funeral Fest vol. 1

We are psyched to report that Denver Electric Funeral festival vol. 1 was indeed the incredible rock 'n' roll blowout we all hoped it would be. We're finally piecing our brains back together after one hell of a week - there will be a ton of content from the event to follow, both on this website and in our next print magazine.

Massive thanks to all the bands for rallying to Denver and delivering wildly excellent sets, to the venue, all the attendees and sponsors, and a special thanks to Dust Presents for wrangling this all together and inviting us to be a part of the inaugural event.

ROS: You’ve all got pretty great nicknames – Cooter, Muleboy, Magma, Spanky... Do any of these have a funny story behind it?

Cooter Brown: Pick one.

ROS: Cooter.

Magma: I gave him that. He used to have this Goodyear hat that he would wear all the time, like the guy from Dukes of Hazzard. And ya know, he is kind of a gear head. He's a mechanic. We had a group of the same friends and he was in a band with our friend Jeff called Cuda and every time I saw him I would say, “That guy is like Cooter from Dukes of Hazzard,” and it stuck.

ROS: How about Magma?

Magma: We were in a band with a guy TB, or Dana. He bartended at a place called Pinckney Street Hide-Away where Jeff worked the door. One night, out of sheer coincidence, I went out for a drink with girl I worked with. This girl turns to the bar and goes "Oh, this is my new boss" (I managed a Subway or something) And she's like, "This is my new boss, I want to buy him a shot." A second after that, this group of people including a woman I went to high school with walked in. I hadn't seen her since, it had been like 15 years. She goes, “Oh my god! Holy shit! So good to see you,” and whatever. “Hey let’s all do a shot.” And Dana is like, "Another shot from a lady" or something like that. Then, no bullshit, five minutes later, the girl I was dating walked in. I knew she was going to be up there, but anyway, she buys me a shot and Dana is like, "Wow, you haven't spent a penny here yet! You are getting oiled. Three shots bought for you, all from girls. You're on fire! You're hot! You’re hot lava, man, you're THE lava man! MAGMA! You're the Magma Man!” And it went on and on. We had just recorded four songs, like an EP, and had put it out on cassette and that fucking smart ass put my name down on the cassette as Magma and that’s been the nickname ever since... 20 something years ago.

Issue II Shipping Update

Update regarding Issue II: We received the unfortunate news yesterday that as the new zine was headed to print, the press at the shop we use broke and will not be fixed for some time. Accordingly, we are scrambling to find a new print house that can deliver the product we need in a timely manner. Though we intend to have the issue printed and in the mail ASAP, it's very unlikely we will be able to ship on May 12th. We don't anticipate too much of a delay and will update our shipping date as soon as it in confirmed. If anyone has pre-ordered and a delay of a week or so is a deal breaker for any reason, please drop us a message at ritualofsinmag@gmail.com and we will refund your purchase. We ARE still accepting pre-orders here.

For the patient ones who've pre-ordered and weather this one with us, you're package will include a little extra something. Thanks, y'all!
